In a battle between two teams fighting for European places, and just maybe holding out hopes of a late title run, Bayer Leverkusen came out 3-1 winners over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Leverkusen dominated the first half and Kai Havertz added to his growing reputation to put them up 1-0 at the break.

Gladbach were much better in the second half and Marcus Thuram equalized after great ball by Alassane Plea.
The key incident happened soon after, when Thuram went clean through but his attempt was smothered as he was slightly pulled back. While waiting for the next stoppage so that VAR could take a look, Karim Bellarabi gets in for Leverkusen and is taken out after shooting wide. VAR determines no penalty for Gladbach but gives a penalty for Leverkusen, which Kai Havertz dispatches to restore their lead.

Gladbach kept getting the better chances and an equalizer looked more likely until until Sven Bender’s header from a right wing free kick gave Leverkusen daylight. Gladbach spurned two decent opportunities just after 3-1 and Leverkusen were able to run out comfortable winners in the end.
